How do we use our current time and resources to equip children with ASD with skills and supports that will help them transition into adulthood? The 12th Annual Alabama Autism Conference, “Looking towards Adulthood: Thoughtful Planning Using Today’s Interventions,” will provide information on this very important question. Nationally recognized speakers will discuss evidence-based strategies to support children and adolescents with ASD as they learn and grow into adults with ASD.

Objectives:
  • Provide information related to evidence based methods of social skills instruction.
  • Describe economically valid social skills related to making and keeping friends.
  • Discuss the importance of determining the function of challenging behavior prior to intervention.
  • Define the components of a comprehensive behavior support plan.
  • Explain the current adult living outcomes for individuals with ASD with a focus on employment and independent living.
  • Identify at least three important secondary transition evidence based practices and predictors that improve post school success for transition youth with ASD and other disabilities.
  • Describe potential implications of the evidence based practices and predictors on the development of secondary transition programs and supports/services for individuals with ASD.
  • Describe factors that make the transition to adulthood difficult for families.
  • Identify communication, social, and independent living challenges that often interfere with successful employment for young adults with ASD.
