Westley Burr Student Paper Award

Purpose:

The award is intended to encourage and recognize the scholarly activity of students who are members of NCFR and the Family Science Section. The competition is open to students who serve as first authors of a poster or paper accepted for presentation at the annual conference by the Family Science Section.

Award (Plaque, Money, Recognition, where presented, etc.):

The award winner will receive a $300 cash award and a plaque. The award will be presented annually at the Family Science Section Business Meeting at the NCFR Annual Conference.

Criteria:

  • Students who served as first authors of a proposal that was submitted to and accepted by the Family Science Section for presentation (poster or paper format) at the annual conference.
  • Student (undergraduate or graduate)
  • Current member of NCFR and the Family Science Section
  • Papers are judged on the following criteria:
  • Students' level of contribution to the project
  • Strength of the literature review
  • Appropriateness and soundness of the research approach
  • Relevance and significance of findings
  • Clarity of linkages between research and application to further research, practice, theory, or policy
  • Quality of writing

Nomination/Application Process:

  • Full paper must be emailed to the Chair-Elect of the section by October 1st.
  • Statement from the students' advisor which describes the students' role in the project.
  • One-page statement of the students' career goals.

Deadline for Application:

Application deadline is October 1st.
