About the Program
The Department of Psychology and Family Studies offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Family Studies. Minors are also available in both areas.The Bachelor of Science degree in Family Studies may be pursued by students interested in careers that involve working with children and families . The Family Studies program focuses on dynamics within families, the social context of the family, as well as the development of individuals within the family unit. Also, family structures, member roles, and family interactions are examined. This major is intended to prepare students interested in working with family life education in community service agencies. The degree leads to provisional certification as a family life educator through the National Council on Family Relations Certified Family Life Educator program.

Students must have an overall QPA of 2.0 to enroll in the family studies major. A grade of C or higher in each course is required for the family studies major. The first major course in which a student earns less than a C may be repeated one time for a higher grade. If the student fails to earn a C in the repeated courser or any subsequent required course, they will be dropped from the program. Upon completion of all 200-series FS courses, students must have earned a 2.25 QPA in the major in order to progress to the 300-series courses. Upon completion of all 300-series FS courses, the student must have earned a 2.50 QPA in the major in order to progress to the 400-series courses. Students MUST maintain a 2.5 in the 400-series FS courses in order to be eligible to enroll in FS 499, Field Experience.
CFLE Information
NCFR recognizes schools offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs with course work that follows the Standards and Criteria required for approval as a Provisional Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE). NCFR approval allows the school to offer their graduates the opportunity to apply for Provisional Certification using the Abbreviated Application process. The CFLE Checklist represents the courses that meet the CFLE criteria at that school. Students must complete all the courses on a checklist in order to qualify to apply for the CFLE designation through the Abbreviated Application process.
