Manuscript Preparation

JMF follows the guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition. A general section (pp. 21-59) covers manuscript preparation. Access JMF-specific, detailed instructions at Style Guide

  • Double-space all parts of the manuscript, including text, headings, abstract, quotations, references, and tables.
  • Use 12-point font and save your file as a Microsoft Word document. (Note that JMF does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents at this time. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.)
  • Keep tables and figures to a minimum. (See the APA Publication Manual for advice about when to include tables, pp.147-149, and figures, pp.176-177.)
  • Please consult our website for information on preparing tables for the Journal of Marriage and Family. From the website, you can download sample tables in Word, and use them as templates for your own tables. The sample tables are also available in PDF format.
  • JMF articles do not include footnotes.
  • The reference list must match work cited in the text.
  • Taken together, title or cover page, abstract, text, references, tables, and figures, and any appendices should be approximately 30-35 manuscript pages.
