Professor Joyce Arditti at Virginia Tech talks about her research on parental incarceration and the transformative effect it had on her scholarship. Criminology has long been examined in the social sciences. However, Dr. Arditti has added a family lens to this area of study. Recovering Families is a 34 page parenting workbook designed to be used by parenting programs, drug and alcohol inpatient rehab facilities, outpatient counseling offices, and support groups that are working with parents who are recovering from chemical addiction.
Parenting Piece by Piece is a curriculum guide for a series of eight parenting education sessions and three optional sessions. It was originally designed for use with parents who have been mandated to attend parenting training due to their identification as abusive and/or neglectful parents. The current edition also includes guidelines for adapting the program for use with incarcerated parents or with the caregivers of children whose parents have lost custody.
