NCFR ETHNIC MINORITIES SECTION MEETING MINUTES
NOVEMBER 2007 – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Minutes dated November 2006 were approved. Andrew Behnke moved that the minutes be accepted and there were multiple seconds of the motion.

SPECIAL GUEST
Hilary Rose, the new TCRM Chair, spoke about the mission of the TCRM Section. She encouraged EM Section members to submit papers, contribute to the discussion, and that graduate students were welcomed. March 1, 2008 is the deadline for submission of papers.

BUDGET
As of September 30, 2007, the section has a balance of $5,189.26. There is over $20,000 in the John McAdoo Dissertation Award account. Effective January 1, 2008, the EM Section will receive a flat rate of $2,500 per year. Members will no longer pay an individual section fee for membership, but must sign-up for section memberships at the time of annual dues renewal.

GOLDFARB
We have 254 members in the EM Section to date and there was a 7% increase in the rate of submissions for the conference. The quality of submissions was very good and other sections were open to having EM papers. We had submissions for Latino, African American, Asian, multicultural, and one for Native American populations.

Members were encouraged to follow through on commitments made to serve as a presider, discussant, and reviewer for the conference. Sign-up sheets for the 2008 conference were passed around and collected. Starting in 2008, there will be no more session presiders in order to allow more time or papers and discussants.

The Chair urged members to suggest names for plenary speakers for the 2008 conference. We are targeting recognized EM speakers for the 2009 conference which has a multicultural issues theme. Recognized international speakers also are encouraged.

There is space allotted for each section in the NCFR Report for news updates. Members were encouraged to contribute to future reports.

NCFR will hold a Townhall Meeting on November 10 from 8-10 AM for institutional identity discussions. All members are encouraged to attend. Katia and Robert Reyes serve on the Institutional Identity Task Force.

The 2008 NCFR election ballot contains the names of (4) EM Section members. Members were encouraged to submit nominations for the 2009 NCFR election ballot.

E.M. ORAL HISTORY PROJECT
Tammy Henderson continues to take the lead role with this project. She updated members on the current status. The oral history project survey was sent out to members but not all members received it via email; 42 members responded. Tammy will be resending the survey to members in April 2008 and all were encouraged to respond. A request was made for pictures to go along with the history. She is preparing the project for the 70th anniversary of NCFR - the traditional part.

E.M. ORAL HISTORY PRESIDERS
For 2008, the Asian American Focus Group will take the lead for our oral history presentation.  We will be seeking a special session for our EM Section history during the conference in 2008.

NOMINATIONS
After extensive discussion, it was decided that Katia would send an email out to all EMS members to request nominations for the 2008 election of officers as not all members were present and able to confirm that they would serve if nominated.

GOALS
In two years it will be the 30th Anniversary of the EMS.  We hope to produce a document for both the 30th anniversary as well as the 70th anniversary of NCFR.

Motion to adjourn was made by and seconded by multiple members. Meeting adjourned at 7:15 PM followed by the commencement of the Oral History presentation.
