Theory Construction / Research Methodology Participatory Workshop
Constructing Social Theory
Session ID#:
TCRM David Bell
Date:
Tuesday, November 2, 2010Time:
9:00 am - 12:30 pm
Session Location:
Marquette Room 2 Session Type: TCRM
About the Session
Every theory consists of both a description of some causal logic (the theoretical orientation) and an application of that logic to some class of empirical situations (the theory itself). This workshop will show ways to make this distinction so as to heighten the clarity of theory discourse. Using Bell's Constructing Social Theory, the workshop will examine a sample of theoretical logics (in particular, exchange, power, and connection logics). The workshop will also present pedagogical suggestions for teaching theory construction.
