Military Children: Examining The Impact of Parental Deployment

Presented by: Stacy Ann Hawkins et al

This three-paper symposium explores the impact of parental deployment on children. First, "Parental Deployment and Children: A Review of the Literature Since 2001," reviews the studies linking parental deployment and children's functioning during the current conflicts. Second, "Psychological and Academic Problems of Children of Deployed Military Service Members: A Meta-Analysis of Quantitative Research," presents quantitative evidence about the relation between parental deployment and children's outcomes. Finally, "Methodological Challenges and Areas for Future Research," discusses the limitations and challenges to research in this area. The symposium will close with discussant remarks and open discussion about conducting research on military families.
