Polices and Life Pathways of Grandparents Rearing Grandchildren in a Shifting Economy

Presented by: Sandra J. Bailey, Matt Kaplan, Tammy L. Henderson, Bethany N. Letiecq, Deborah Haynes, Whitney Brosi

In the past 20 years, researchers have documented the increasing number of grandparents rearing grandchildren and the impact on the well-being of the caregivers with little research focusing on the economic impacts. Research finds that grandparent caregivers face numerous financial challenges. This symposium examines the issues facing grandparents rearing grandchildren within a shifting economy using an ecological perspective beginning with a microsystem view of the family and ending with a macrosystem discussion of public policy.
