Portability of Family Therapy to Different Cultural Experiences

Presented by: Liang-Ying Chou, Rajeswari Natrajan-Tyagi, Karen Quek, Cheryl Storm

This symposium addresses the applicability of Western family therapy concepts and techniques in other cultural contexts. Studies suggest therapists who serve diverse cultural clientele should translate concepts and principles before using them. Culturally relevant therapeutic practice is emerging as a vital topic for therapists and supervisors who recognize diversity within a society and acknowledge valuable contributions from those with differing backgrounds. All papers utilize qualitative methods address the followings: 1)what are transferable/not-transferable in an Indian context; 2)what are the training experiences & professional concerns of Asian family therapists, and 3)how Chinese dominant discourses control the internal dialogues in supervisory/therapy relationships.
