The Division of Labor and Family Processes in Diverse Family Contexts

Presented by: Abbie Goldberg, Rachel Farr, Charlotte Patterson, Samantha Tornello, Lori Kinkler, April Moyer, Katie Newkirk, Maureen Perry-Jenkins

The division of labor has been studied extensively in heterosexual, two-parent, biologically-related families. Less is known about the division of labor and family processes in other family forms (e.g., adoptive-parent, lesbian/gay-parent, and single-parent families). Examining how divisions of labor are enacted in diverse family contexts, and how divisions of labor are related to family outcomes such as parent-child relationships, is important, as such studies challenge assumptions related to the gendered (and biologically mediated) nature of family work. This symposium examines the division of labor and family outcomes among several diverse family contexts: namely, adoptive-parent, same-sex parent, and single-parent families.
