Sickle Cell Disease: Improving Care for Patients and Families Through Film

Presented by: Jackie Williams Reade

As part of a larger study designed to enhance the palliative care training of interdisciplinary professionals who care for adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD), we developed documentary videos based on interviews with patients, families, and clinicians. Using these films as a teaching tool, this workshop is designed to explore (1) the lived experiences and unmet needs of adolescents with SCD and their family members, (2) the impact of caring for these patients and families on interdisciplinary teams of clinicians, and (3) to describe the impact of our intensive educational retreat using documentary films on the attitudes of interdisciplinary clinicians.
