#235 (TC1A-1) Measuring Co-parenting With Time Diary Methodology
Presented by: Letitia E. Kotila, Sarah J. Schoppe-Sullivan, Claire M. Kamp Dush
Utilizing time diary data from a sub-sample (n=39) of first time, dual-earner parents, we developed couple-level time diary measures of coparenting, including shared childcare, complementary childcare, teamwork, and parent-child/parent-leisure. Our novel measures showed strong correlations with well-established questionnaire (n=39) and observational (n=26) measures, indicating its potential strength in capturing nuances in the division of family labor and shared parenting that may significantly impact parents’ perceptions of their coparenting relationship.
#235 (TC1A-2) Couple Observational Coding of Computer-mediated Communication
Presented by: Martha S. Perry
How can couple observational coding systems be applied to communication that takes place online or is text-based? This workshop will explore the need for new or modified coding schemes for computer-mediated communication (CMC) given the lack of non-verbal cues that exist in text-based communication. In addition, the use of CMC by romantic couples and the general differences between CMC and FtF communication will be highlighted. Methodological contributions include theoretical construct modifications as well as an empirical comparison of coding modifications of the Interactional Dimensions Coding System (IDCS) using face to face versus CMC conditions and across rater (inter-rater reliability) comparisons.
