Exploring Sibling Relationships in Context

Presented by: Anna Solmeyer, Susan McHale, Shawn Whiteman, Alexander Jensen, Sue Rodríguez, Kimberly Updegraff, Sarah Killoren, Adriana Umaña-Taylor

The symposium features the work of three research groups dedicated to the study of sibling relationships and the contexts in which these relationships are embedded. Collectively, these papers draw on ecological and sociocultural frameworks to represent diverse family, culture, and community contexts, and combine longitudinal and cross-sectional data from multiple family members to extend research on sibling processes in new directions. The symposium highlights the importance of examining how individual and dyad characteristics interact with features of the larger social and cultural context to inform sibling and family relationship dynamics.
