Exploring Sibling Relationships in Context - Audio Recording

The symposium features the work of three research groups dedicated to the study of sibling relationships and the contexts in which these relationships are embedded. Collectively, these papers draw on ecological and sociocultural frameworks to represent diverse family, culture, and community contexts, and combine longitudinal and cross-sectional data from multiple family members to extend research on sibling processes in new directions.

Increasing diversity in family forms challenges traditional notions of family. The number of married couples has fallen to about half of households, and multiracial families are rising. These shifts are significant for both parent and child well-being. Given these shifting trends, research that challenges traditional notions of who "counts" as a parent, child, or other family member is essential for the development of policies and programs.

The first studied the financial, attitudinal, and behavioral factors that may help married couples avoid relationship quality decline in times of economic pressure. The second assessed whether financial coping differed across different race and ethnic groups. The last studied how individuals financially cope with divorce.
