Abstract

This invited symposium addresses the critical problem of health disparities facing women of color and other women living in the margins of society, and their families. Drs. Norwood and Coehlo will review briefly the literature on health disparities related to women's health (preconception, prenatal care, infant mortality) and those evidenced in among children with special health care needs (diagnosis, extent and quality of interventions, experiences in health care and education). The presenters will discuss their own research, illuminating and supplementing quantitative findings through narrative and case example, with emphasis on short and long term consequences of disparities, and program and policy implications. Finally, there will be discussion of changes needed at multiple levels, from national policy to community programming.
