The American Academy of Pediatrics just released an article about how to create safe sleeping environments for infants. There are numerous recommendations - among them are placing babies on their back to sleep, using a firm sleeping surface and removing any objects or bedding that could cause asphyxia such as crib bumpers. "Tummy time" is important, but it should be supervised. Co-sleeping, controversial for years, is not recommended.
