Information on food insecurity
from Child Trends
October 18, 2011
Child Trends reports that in 2010, nearly one in four U.S. children (24 percent) lived in households that were "food-insecure" at some point during the year, and 1.3 percent experienced the most severe level of need, where food intake is reduced and regular eating patterns are disrupted. Inadequate food intake in children is associated with a number of serious health, behavior, and cognitive deficits.
