The Accordion Family

The next NCFR book club selection is The Accordion Family: Boomerang Kids, Anxious Parents and the Private Toll of Global Competition by Johns Hopkins sociologist Katherine S. Newman. In this book, Dr. Newman asks the question, “Why are adults in their 20s and 30s stuck in their parents’ homes in the world’s wealthiest countries?” Her research covered this trend in six nations and identified these families as “accordion families,” expanding and changing in response to globalism, public and private safety nets, demographics, culture and more. Is the Boomerang the “new normal?”

The book club is open to all Zippy readers. Simply purchase the book and start reading. We will enjoy an engaging book this winter and then schedule a one-time conference call in the spring. Dr. Newman will join us for the discussion! Please write to NCFR staff member Nancy Gonzalez to express interest at nancygonzalez@ncfr.org.
