Going Global: A Cross-National View of Couples and Housework

Housework has been a gold mine for research. Searching Sociological Abstracts online identifies more than 1,000 articles on the topic. The twenty-first century, however, has taken research in a new direction. There are now more studies on how couples in other countries divide the work around the house, including studies of non-Western societies such as China. Instead of simply putting couples' housekeeping under a microscope, researchers are switching to a wide-angle lens.

Take couple bed-sharing. Tens of millions of adult couples in the United States share a bed, but until recently not much was written about it in the academic literature or the popular press.

Characteristics of Young Adult Sexual Relationships: Diverse, Sometimes Violent, Often Loving

Child Trends analyzed data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Results of our analyses indicate that young adult relationships are fairly diverse; that these relationships have both positive and negative dimensions; and that partner and relationship characteristics and patterns of contraceptive use vary considerably by relationship type, gender, and race/ethnicity.

Parental Relationship Quality and Child Outcomes Across Subgroups

A new Child Trends brief finds that relationship quality between parents is consistently and positively associated with better outcomes for children and families. This brief, Parental Relationship Quality and Child Outcomes across Subgroups, notes that the positive association holds across many subgroup comparisons, including income, marital status, parental education, and race/ethnicity. These analyses were completed using data from the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health

This guidebook is designed to help individuals who may be thinking about divorce to consider the decision carefully and make the best decision. It offers research-based information about the many questions individuals may have about the decision to divorce or stay together and repair the relationship. It also offers numerous personal application exercises to think about and tailor the information to the reader's unique situation.
