News from the Religion and Family Life Section
Greetings from the Religion and Family Life Section! By the time you read this, our conference in Orlando will be over. The section had several impressive paper and poster presentations as well as an outstanding special session. At our business meeting two awards were presented. The first was the award for the S/NP Outstanding Paper. This was presented to Julie Zaloudek, University of Wisconsin-Stout. The second was the award for the Professional Outstanding Paper, which was presented to Karen Quek, Alliant International University.
I am the new chair of the Religion and Family Life Section and I am looking forward to the responsibilities and opportunities offered by this position. Joe Wilmoth, our past chair, has done an outstanding job of moving our section forward. During his tenure, he supported the section's ongoing projects and directed the development of a religion and family life bibliography. He worked tirelessly to plan and organize the section's 2010 and 2011 conference sessions. I want to thank him for his leadership and support of our section. I also want to thank Teri Henke for her service as the S/NP. It was under her leadership that the daily conference mediations were so successful for the last two conferences.
We have a dedicated slate of new officers ready to go to work on behalf of the section. They are Loren Marks, Chair-elect: Chris Gonzalez, Secretary/Treasurer: Bryce Jorgensen, S/NP Representative; and Joe Wilmoth, Past Chair. We look forward to working together as we maintain our ongoing projects and look for new ways to enhance the work and profile of the section.
The Religion and Family Life Section has two ongoing projects. The first is the compilation of syllabi of courses that address issues related to religion and family life. We encourage anyone who teaches such a course to send your syllabus to me and I will forward it to the appropriate person. If you know of a course someone else is teaching, please send me contact information for the instructor. The second project the section is working on is a religion and family life bibliography. This can be accessed through the Professional Resource Library on the NCFR website. If you know of additional resources that should be added, please email me and I will see that they are included on the list.
Plans for the 2012 conference are underway. The theme of the conference is "Families and Health," and it will take place in Phoenix, October 31-November 3. I encourage you and your colleagues to consider submitting a proposal to the Religion and Family Life Section. The Call for Proposals is available on the NCFR website and the deadline for submissions is March 1. Also, if you have ideas about potential speakers or topics, please let me know.
