Family Life: Human Development (B.S.)

School of Family Life

The School of Family Life requires a minimum of 18 hours of upper-division major coursework to be taken in residency at BYU for this degree program. (This requirement includes taking at least 12 hours minimum of the human development core in residency at BYU.) These hours may also go toward BYU's 30-hour residency requirement for graduation.

There are two tracks in the Human Development program: Human Development and Biological Foundations. The Biological Foundations track is designed to assist students who are heading to careers involving health and medicine.

Program Outcomes:

Human Development Content and Theory

  • Demonstrate understanding of major concepts, theories, and research findings in substantive areas of human development.

Research and Evaluation Methodologies

  • Critically evaluate and/or use the various methodologies used in human development research.

Effective Writing and Analysis

  • Write professional research papers on human development questions that demonstrate an ability to synthesize and critically evaluate research related to specific theories and/or substantive areas.

CFLE program approved discontinued effective 09/30/2023. CFLE coursework must be completed by 09/30/2023. Graduates may apply for CFLE through the CFLE-approved program process until 09/30/2025.
