Family and Consumer Sciences (B.S.)

Department of Family & Consumer Sciences

The mission of the Family Studies option in the Family & Consumer Sciences major is to enhance the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities through education, research, creative endeavors, and public services. The Family Studies program is accredited by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). All students in the Family Studies program are mentored and guided by our faculty advisors. Our courses integrate the educational experience that will help students attain promising careers in childcare and administration, as well as family services.

There are two pattern options within the Family Studies program:

  • Childcare and Administration Pattern A: The Childcare and Administration Pattern is for students who desire a career in early childcare systems. This pattern trains students to work effectively with young children and their families with a focus on fostering the growth and development of the child while recognizing the needs and values of the family. This program meets requirements for certification by the State of California Department of Education, Child Development Division.
  • Family Services Pattern B: The Family Services Pattern is for students who wish to work in social services or other helping professions. This pattern focuses on the needs of the entire family throughout the lifespan, examining issues including adolescence, marriage, sexuality, and aging.
