The Department of Professional Psychology and Family Therapy in the College of Education and Human Services at Seton Hall University contains two Marriage and Family Therapy programs (M.S.and Ed.S.). The Master's of Science (M.S.) and Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) programs in Marriage and Family Therapy are both part and full-time study opportunities for persons interested in pursuing a career in marriage and family therapy. The M.S. is a 60 credit hour specialization designed to prepare beginning level professionals by providing a firm theoretical foundation and intensive clinical training with a diversity of individuals, couples, and families. The M.S. also meets the educational requirements for licensure as a clinical alcohol and drug counselor in New Jersey. The Ed.S. program is a 39 credit hour specialization designed for professionals who possess a master's degree in a related field and who would like to specialize in MFT. Both programs are nationally accredited by AAMFTs Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE).  The M.S.and Ed.S., are designed to meet the academic requirements for New Jersey Licensure in Marriage and Family Therapy. The faculty consists of AAMFT Approved Supervisors and licensed MFTs who are highly knowledgeable and passionate about their work with couples and families.

The Counselor Education program faculty adhere to the scientist problem-solver model of training. Consistent with this approach are the program goals of graduating students who have extensive knowledge of counseling theories and practice, possess a high level of competency in providing professional services, have the skills necessary to evaluate research relevant to their practice, and are committed to evaluating their own clinical and programmatic interventions. Although coursework covers the wide spectrum of counseling concerns and client functioning, there is a strong emphasis on understanding the normal developmental themes throughout a person's life, as well as ways persons may respond to developmental challenges and seek to cope with life changes and transitions. Thus, the program emphasizes mental health and wellness vs. pathology. In addition, application of theoretical knowledge is strongly emphasized throughout the program, as students are enrolled in supervised clinical experiences from the first semester to the last.

The Marriage and Family Counseling (EDC) program specialization emphasizes an ecosystemic approach to understanding human problems and generating solution opportunities. Students learn to moderate solution-oriented conversations among interested parties (i.e., stakeholders) who are invited to seek "double descriptions" of mutual concerns and problems, to listen carefully to each other, to entertain and invent multiple solution possibilities, and to construct new narratives of cooperation and commitment.

Located in the highly international and diverse community of Miami, Florida, the Department of Educational and Psychological Studies (EPS) housed in the School of Education and Human Development prepares reflective leaders, researchers, methodologists, and practitioners to improve psychological, educational, and community well-being. At EPS we educate mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, researchers and doctoral-level psychologists in an APA accredited program. In addition, we offer an undergraduate major in Human and Social Development which prepares students for masters and doctoral level studies in counseling and related fields.

The Department of EPS is made up of the following five master's programs: Mental Health Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Community and Social Change, Research, Measurement and Evaluation, and Higher Education Leadership. We also offer a post-Master's Certificate Latino Mental Health Program aimed at enhancing clinical skills in the assessment and treatment of Latino clients. The Department of EPS offers four doctoral programs: Counseling Psychology, Research, Measurement and Evaluation, Higher Education Leadership, and Community Well-Being. In addition, we have a Community and Educational Well-Being Research Center (CEW) that promotes individual, interpersonal, institutional, and community well-being by studying the educational, psychological, physical, and social determinants of well-being.

Programs in the Department of Counseling Psychology and Human Services educate and train professionals in counseling psychology, prevention science, couples and family therapy, and family and human services. Students are trained to effectively identify, treat, and prevent psychological problems in children, adolescents, adults, and families. At the doctoral level, students extend scientific knowledge through research in collaboration with faculty mentors. Field placements, practicum placements, and internships at all levels of training provide students with opportunities to practice in schools, community agencies, and clinical and research settings under the supervision of faculty members, agency personnel, and collaborating scholars. Three programs in the CPHS Department are formally accredited by the corresponding professional accrediting body (Counseling Psychology-APA, Couples & Family Therapy-COAMFTE, and Family & Humans Services-CSHSE).

The Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy Program is a dually accredited master's and doctoral program (CACREP and COAMFTE). The master's degree entails 63 semester hours, and 500 direct clinical hours to graduate; the doctoral program is 120 semester hours (which may include transfer of appropriate master's level courses). Students must complete 1000 hours of direct client care to graduate, of which 500 hours may be brought in from a MFT master's degree. Students who complete the master's degree curriculum are eligible to sit for the MFT and PC licenses in the state of Ohio. Students admitted into the doctoral program must complete a dissertation for completion of their degrees. Initial clinical hours for both degrees are completed at the Clinic for Individual and Family Therapy, a clinic that serves the urban area.

The MFT Master's program is designed around an outcomes-based educational philosophy. All coursework and program experiences are intended to foster student development and contribute to the following student outcomes upon program completion: (1) Demonstrate knowledge of the history and ongoing development of the MFT discipline, within regional, national, and international contexts; (2) Demonstrate familiarity with selected traditional and contemporary MFT models, including knowledge of key individuals associated with models, unique terminology, conceptuaization of problems, role of therapist, and goals for process within each model, and applications within individual, couple, and family therapy; (3) Utilize knowledge of clients' and therapists' contexts (i.e., culture, economic, family circumstances, family status) to positively contribute to therapeutic process and outcomes; Articulate critiques of MFT models based on culture, gender, and socioeconomic status; (4) Articulate critique of MFT models based on knowledge of child development and factors influencing child development; recognize differential impact of individual and family life cycle within family system; (5) Ability to evaluate appropriateness and apply selected model(s) within individual, couple, and family modalities to facilitate therapeutic process through intake, systemic assessment, treatment planning, management of therapeutic process, evaluation of treatment outcomes, and termination; (6) Demonstrate awareness of and ability to facilitate the development of a positive therapeutic alliance to enhance clinical outcomes with all family members in all modalities of therapy; (7) Demonstrate awareness of one's own professional strengths and limitations and ability to seek and utilize supervision, peer consultation, and involvement of other professionals to enhance treatment outcomes; (8) Demonstrate ability to evaluate own professional conduct in relation to MFT ethical guidelines (AAMFT code and Texas law), recognize ethical dilemmas that may arise in practice settings, and respond appropriately; (9) Demonstrate ability to utilize empirical research and published literature from MFT and related fields to enhance therapeutic services; and (10) Demonstrate one's professional identity as a Marriage and Family Therapist through membership in local, state, and national professional MFT organizations, as well as pursuit of LMFT licensure process in Texas.

The Department of Psychology and Counseling offers three CACREP-accredited programs: M. Ed. in School Counseling, M. S. in Mental Health Counseling, and M. S. in Marriage and Family Counseling. The specialized Marriage and Family Counseling (MFC) program prepares graduates for the Licensed Professional Counselor credential. Graduates acquire competencies needed to treat parent-child problems, marital conflict, sexual dysfunction, substance abuse and other family problems within a multicultural context.
