Child and Family Studies provides the tools for understanding and working with children and families in a variety of settings. The program of study focuses primarily on the various stages of human growth and development over the life span, families in society, diverse relationships within families, human sexuality, family resource management, parenting and family law and public policy. Students in this program are trained to intergrate knowledge of child/adolescent development, adult life stages and human relations into service-oriented assistance.

To prepare students for successful careers in the field of Social Sciences concentrating on Family & Child Studies professions.  The focus is on providing a curriculum that promotes competence in the areas of prevention, education, and intervention in the practice of professions that are human-development and social-work related, serving the well-being of individuals,  families, children, youth, and the elderly with a family orientation..

The School of Human Ecology offers an undergraduate major in Family and Child Studies, with concentration areas in Family Studies, Child Life, and Applied Child Development. The Family Science Curriculum is an approved program with the National Council on Family Relations for provisional certification as Certified Family Life Educators. A Master of Science is also offered in Family and Consumer Sciences with a concentration in Family and Child Studies. We are a small unit with 13 full time graduate faculty, five of whom focus on family and child studies. Our family studies M.S. program emphasizes application of skill in the profession. Many of our students are part time, thus full time students have strong chances of receiving financial aid in the form of scholarships and assistantships. Our faculty members are personable and encourage student professional development.

The Department of Counseling & Human Development offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in academic areas of counseling, social work, and family studies. All graduate programs in the Department are fully accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP). The faculty and staff of the Department are committed to excellence and strive to prepare students for success in their chosen field of study. In addition to Louisiana residents, we actively seek qualified out-of-state and international students for admission into our degree programs.
