The Human Development and Family Studies program at Penn State was among the first of its kind in the nation, and continues to be one of the most respected. Our multidisciplinary program helps students explore the development of individuals and families across the life span, in order to prepare for professional, managerial, or scientific roles in health and human services professions, in public and nonprofit agencies, and in business and industry, as well as for advanced professional or graduate study. Courses emphasize biological, psychological, social/cultural, and economic aspects of development, as well as applied skills in intervention and evaluation, prevention, and the formulation of social policy. An internship in a setting that serves children, youth, adults, or the aged is required for this degree program. Through course work, undergraduate internships or research projects, students develop skills relevant to career objectives, such as counseling, assessment, program planning and evaluation, and research.

Human Ecology is an interdisciplinary department that offers a holistic systems approach to examine the interrelationships that individuals and families have with social, economic, and political factors and conditions. This student-centered, research intensive department offers a BSc in Human Ecology with a major in Family Ecology (minors in Aging, Child and Youth Studies, Community Diversity, Community Ecology, Community Nutrition, International Development), MSc in Aging, MSc in Family Ecology and Practice, and a PhD in Human Ecology (with streams in Aging and Children, Youth and Families). Undergraduate and graduate programs focus on individuals and families across the life course, and on the development and evaluation of policy and programs to enhance individual and family well-being. Research programs focus on understanding the physical, economic, and social aspects of aging with a focus on aging well, and on enhancing the health and well-being of children, youth, and families across the life course with an emphasis on vulnerable groups.

The Human Development and Family Studies concentrations are part of the Department of Educational Psychology in the College of Education. These program areas prepare professionals through study, research, and practical experiences to enhance the quality of life and education for children, youth, adults, and families. Graduates are prepared to assume diverse roles in parent/family life education, child life, early childhood intervention, teaching, research, administration, and other professions requiring knowledge of human development and family life. The undergraduate and graduate programs are connected with the Certified Family Life Educator credential through the National Council on Family Relations and with Early Childhood Intervention certification through the state of Texas. We have had an active Child Life program since the 1980's, and we train public school teachers who certify in Family and Consumer Sciences.

The Department of Family Studies and Community Development was founded on the belief that the family is the fundamental unit in contemporary society. Support of healthy family functioning strengthens individual, group, and societal functioning. The department offers the opportunity to study individual and family development, dynamics within families, and the interactions between families and society.

The department offers two undergraduate majors and one minor. Family and Human Services is an applied major that prepares students to be human service professionals. Students in this major choose among four different tracks: Humans Services, Services to Children and Youth, Introduction to Child Life, and Leadership in the Nonprofit Sector. Community participation is required in several core courses throughout the family and human services curriculum. The Family Science major emphasizes scholarship and research in the discipline. It focuses on the social and behavioral science foundation necessary for those working in family therapy, psychology, education, health and other human services. The family studies minor fits nicely for students who are interested in studying families along with their major focus of study, especially students in the health professions, liberal arts and education.

The academic coursework provides the foundation for graduate study in social, behavioral, and health sciences or for advanced professional training in counseling, psychology, social work, law, medicine, and the allied health professions, such as occupational therapy and physical therapy. The department offers the following graduate programs: Child Life, Administration and Family Collaboration (M.S.); Family-Professional Collaboration Post-Baccalaureate Certificate; Jewish Communal Service (M.A.) and Jewish Education (M.A.).

A Concordia Family Life student will graduate with the academic and practical training to develop and implement programming that equips and supports healthy relationships for marriage and the family. This course of study is designed to prepare men and women to serve in the church and the community as a Certified Family Life Educator. The Family Life program prepares students for the following careers: Position in the church as a DFLM. (Director of Family Life Ministry; an entry level position in the human services field; a Child Life Specialist sho works in a hospital; prepares students for entrance into a master's program in family life, psychology, sociology, and or counseling. The program meets the academic standards for program certification by the National Council on Family Relations, a professional organization for multidisciplinary family professionals. Graduates will be immediately eligible to receive the Certified Family Life Educator credential, which is nationally recognized from NCFR.

The Childhood & Social Institutions Program is a cross disciplinary, limited enrollment program designed to provide students with a useful academic foundation in the subject matter. The program combines the new insights from recent studies of childhood and families in today's society with the best of the more established perspectives to offer a timely, comprehensive and responsive academic experience.

The CSI program is structured to enable and encourage students to combine it with other areas of study. CSI may be taken as an Area of Concentration (3-year BA), as an Honors BA, or as part of an approved Combined Honors program.
