The School of Family Life has over 1,000 undergraduate majors, either pursing a degree in Family Life or Family and Consumer Science Education.  Degrees in Family Life are offered with an emphasis in either Human Development or Family Studies.  The School has COAMFTE-accredited masters and doctoral programs in MFT. Masters and doctoral degree graduate programs are also available in Marriage, Family, and Human Development. In addition, the School administers the university-wide Gerontology Program. Besides offering high quality learning experiences for students, faculty are actively engaged in research on family and human development-related research.

The human development and family studies program at Warner Pacific College prepares students for careers in family life education. Other affiliated majors, under the Department of Social Science, equip students for work in counseling, psychology, social work, developmental psychology, urban studies and secondary social science teaching. Graduate school preparation is a significant aspect of the Warner experience in Social Science, as is educating students in a holistic manner with a liberal arts perspective. Most of our programs include internship experiences that give students hands-on learning to support theoretical frameworks. The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) prepares students for careers that focus on improving the quality of life of individuals and families. FCS offers baccalaureate degrees in Child Development and Family Studies, Fashion Merchandising and Design, Food and Nutritional Sciences, and Consumer Sciences. FCS offers the Masters of Arts in Teaching in:  Child Development Early Education and Family Studies (BK Licensure) and Family and Consumer Sciences Education.  FCS also offers a Masters in Science in Food and Nutritional Sciences.NCA&TSU students earning the Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development and Family Studies (CDFS) are eligible to use the Abbreviated Application for Certification in Family Life Education. During their studies, CDFS students are given a broad understanding of human development across the lifespan, family systems, parent-child relations, family financial planning, human resources management, and appropriate living environments. Academic training includes multiple field experiences and internships at our 5-Star Child Development Laboratory, and other institutions comprising childcare and early childhood settings, youth-programs, family serving agencies, military installations, and faith-based organizations. Leadership skills are developed through student involvement in department-based student organizations and participation in professional conferences. Graduates of the CDFS program are employed in settings including education, family service, Cooperative Extension, religion, healthcare, special-needs, military, and other industries involved in child development and family life education.

Family Resources (FamR) is a Bachelor's of Science degree program that provides students with an ecological systems approach that focuses upon the development of resiliency and nurturing of strengths in human and family development, and family resource management for Asian and Pacific Islander and multicultural families in diverse communities. The FamR curriculum provides students with a multitude of experiences through their coursework, community projects and internships that provide a foundation for working with diverse families and communities. The Family Resource curriculum provides students with the knowledge and professional skills needed for graduate studies, careers in educational and community settings, or family and human service agencies.

The Family Studies Program in the Department of Family Studies and Interior Design is approved by the National Council on Family Relations as offering coursework that leads to the Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) designation. The mission of Family Studies is to enable families, both as individual units and generally as a social institution, to build and maintain systems of action which lead: (1) to maturing in individual self formation, (2) to encourage enlightened, cooperative participation in the critique and formation of social goals and means of accomplishing them, and (3) to enable individuals to be critically aware of consumer resources and their management as well as to develop the competence to base actions upon rational, responsible decisions.

HDFS is committed to the well-being and healthy development of individuals and families. Faculty are social and behavioral scientists and practitioners with training across several disciplines, engaging in classroom and community teaching, multidisciplinary research, and outreach collaborations. Faculty address critical issues facing children and families in society. Individual faculty members have expertise in diverse and specific areas of study, such as the study of grief, family economics, early education, intergenerational interactions, and development during infancy, early childhood, adolescence, and older adulthood. The program's work aligns with federal and state foci on our nation's most vulnerable members infants and young children, at-risk youth, families in poverty, individuals with disabilities, immigrant families, the frail elderly, cultural minorities, and the disenfranchised. The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS), in the School of Health and Human Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service regarding human development and close relationships across the lifespan. The programs in Child and Family Studies are designed to prepare individuals for professional roles working with young children, parents, and families in a variety of settings. CFS students may obtain licensure in Early Childhood Education -Birth-Grade 3 at the undergraduate level, Early Childhood Special Education, and Parent Education at the graduate level. The department believes that children should be studied within the context of their family and community. The department combines the study of early childhood and early childhood special education, parent education and family studies in an integrated manner. This allows networking of professionals in different practice areas and a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding children and families. This integration of students from different areas is unique and is a widely recognized strength of the department.

The School of Health Promotion and Human Development will help you understand your discipline and apply what you learn to the challenges you'll face when you graduate. You will have the opportunity to become a professional in a challenging and dynamic field creating healthier living patterns for the citizens of Wisconsin, our nation, and the world. We offer undergraduate programs in Dietetics, Health Promotion/Wellness and Family and Consumer Science (FCS). The FCS program offers two career options, the Child, Youth & Family Studies option and the Teacher Education option. Both programs lead students toward professions that help youth and adults build strong families, address family challenges and responsibilities, and prepare for family and consumer-related careers. Along with our master's degree in Community & Organizational Leadership, we offer a graduate level teaching licensure in Family & Consumer Sciences designed to prepare students to teach FCS in grades 6-12. Unique strengths of the program is an emphasis on professional development as well as global competence. For example, many students participate in diverse service learning opportunities such as the special needs orphanages of Romania, Mexico, or China. Engaging in community development in Cameroon, Africa, serving in the Community Learning Centers of Rural Nicaragua, or providing summer camps to children of the Lakota Reservation.

Human Ecology department has 15 full-time faculty and approximately 600 undergraduate students. The mission of the Human Ecology Department describes the interdisciplinary programs concerned with family well-being, human development and welfare, the human environment, and their interrelationships. The department takes an ecological perspective focusing on relationships between people and their environments, the development of human potential, and the formation of social goals. Graduates of the Department's academic programs are prepared for careers in the apparel and textiles, child and family studies, dietetics and nutrition, food service and restaurant administration, and positions that utilize the knowledge and skills of a the Human Ecology discipline, including Family Consumer Science Education.

The Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) area includes 24 faculty positions, 18 of which are tenured and tenure-track, serving over 2,000 majors and minors.  We offer academic programs in Child Development, Early Childhood Development and Learning (including teacher certification), Family Studies, and  Gerontology.  Our Family Studies and Child Development majors complete field work early on in their academic training with a semester internship that completes their professional sequence. The Gerontology program is offered as a minor that pairs well with most majors or as a master's level certification.

The Department of Psychology and Family Studies offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Family Studies. Minors are also available in both areas.The Bachelor of Science degree in Family Studies may be pursued by students interested in careers that involve working with children and families . The Family Studies program focuses on dynamics within families, the social context of the family, as well as the development of individuals within the family unit. Also, family structures, member roles, and family interactions are examined. This major is intended to prepare students interested in working with family life education in community service agencies. The degree leads to provisional certification as a family life educator through the National Council on Family Relations Certified Family Life Educator program.

Program Overview

The School of Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) prepares
professionals who support families and individuals in meeting their
human needs in the context of lifespan development. Approximately 600
undergraduate and 60 graduate students are enrolled in FACS degree
programs in the areas of Human Development and Family Sciences, Hospitality
and Tourism Management, and Fashion Merchandising. The programs are based on an interdisciplinary approach, drawing upon the behavioral sciences,
natural sciences, and the humanities. Students learn theories and their
application to professions in nonprofit organizations, private practice,
government, education, and business.

Undergraduate Program in Family and Child Sciences (B.S.)

Students in the Human Development and Family Sciences (B.S.) program are
prepared for a variety of family and child serving careers and/or future graduate
study. Students may choose from three emphases including Family and
Individual Development, Family Social Services or Child Development and
may complete NCFR approved coursework needed for becoming a Certified
Family Life Educator (CFLE). Each emphasis provides students with real
world experience through both practicums, internships and undergraduate
research activities. Students enrolled in the Human Development and Family
Sciences program may participate in both the local student NCFR and NAEYC affiliates.

Graduate Program in Applied Family and Child Sciences (M.S.)

Master's graduates are prepared for advanced practice and professional leadership as well as pursuit of doctoral work. The M.S. in Applied Human Development and Family Sciences (AHDFS) provides professional career enhancement for programming and administration in family social services and child development settings in for-profit, community and governmental agencies as well as the foundation needed for graduate work at the doctoral level. Career settings include youth work, gerontology, child life programs in hospitals, infant and child care programs, family support services, family life, and parenting education programs. Students that enroll in AHDFS's COAMFTE accredited Specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy are trained to become professional marriage and family therapists. Students that enroll in AHDFS's Specialization in Leadership in Aging Studies are trained for employment in applied settings including becoming licensed nursing home administrators. Many students in the AHDFS program receive financial support in the form of Graduate Assistantships.

The Human Development and Family Science major recognizes the crucial role of families in society. The curriculum focuses on personal relationships and their connection to and impact on human living and development.  The program continues to hold to their motto, "Enriching the lives of families through education, service and advocacy."  Since 1999 the family studies curriculum has met the requirements for the Provisional Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) designation awarded by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). The program is designed to prepare students for professional careers in the helping professions, in human service agencies, the non profit sector, or for graduate school and research.  Career options include family life education, parenting education, helping professions, elder care services, family and social services, child development, youth ministry, and education. A significant portion of our students plan to attend a master's degree program in areas such as family law, social work, marriage and family therapy, counseling, early childhood education, occupational therapy and seminary.
