Managing Difficult Group Situations in Parent Education

As parent groups become more diverse, Family Life Educators need greater self-understanding, empathy and deeper appreciation for parents' individual backgrounds and contexts. This webinar will address how to manage challenging behaviors in parent groups such as side conversations, use of technology in a group setting, and politically charged statements. Led by experienced parent educators, attendees will learn about the role of self-reflection in addressing challenging situations, how to practice empathy and understanding of parents, and strategies that can be used to respond during difficult moments.
This webinar will focus on some of the challenging moments that occur when working with parent groups and offer helpful strategies, including how to use appropriate language in response to situations. Participants will consider group context, parental background, and their own emotional responses when selecting various strategies and responses to challenging behaviors. Participants will also have an opportunity to practice new strategies they have learned and reflect on their own emotional responses to difficult situations.
By attending the webinar, you will be able to:
- Understand possible origins and reasons for challenging behaviors within parent groups;
- Identify and select helpful strategies to address challenging behaviors with parent groups;
- Practice selecting strategies that address challenging behaviors in groups scenarios; and
- Practice self-reflection of your own responses to challenging situations and recognize the impact on your role as a Family Life Educator.
Approved for 1.5 hours of CFLE continuing education credit.
About the Presenters
Glen Palm, Ph.D., CFLE, is a professor emeritus of child and family studies at St. Cloud State University where he taught for 30 years from 1983-2013. He created and coordinated the Parent Education Licensure Program from 1984-2013, was the department chair for three terms, and was Interim Dean of the College of Education for 2 years. Glen also worked as a parent educator in Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) programs in Minneapolis and St. Cloud for 40 years. He coordinated the Dad’s Project in St. Cloud as part of the Early Childhood Family Education program which included a number of program offerings for fathers and families. Glen has written extensively about fathers, ethics and parent education including co-authoring four books: Working with Fathers: Methods & Perspectives (1992), Group Parent Education (2004), Fathers and Early Childhood Programs (2004) and Parent Education: Working with Groups and Individuals (2018). He has been a member of NCFR since 1985, a CFLE since 2000, and has served as a board member from 2007-2010.
Deborah Campbell, M.S., is a licensed parent educator who directed the Early Childhood Programs for the Sauk Rapids – Rice (MN) School District for over 20 years. She supervised licensed parent educators and student teachers, while also teaching classes in Group Facilitation, Foundations of Parent Education, Parent-child Relations and Administration of ECFE (Early Childhood Family Education) as an adjunct faculty member in the Child and Family Studies Department at St. Cloud State University. Deb is the co-author of Group Parent Education – Promoting Parent Learning and Support and Parent Education – Working with Groups and Individuals. She has presented numerous workshops and trainings for a variety of family support programs, as well as sessions at state and national conferences.
