Integrating Adult Learning Principles into Family Life Education Practices
Despite most professors and Family Life Educators having a primary job responsibility of educating adults, many find themselves with minimal training on the basic principles of adult learning. Given the significant amount of time education professionals spend developing, implementing, and evaluating educational content for learners, there is a clear need for a deeper understanding of the foundational concepts of adult education. This webinar is designed to bridge that gap by providing participants with a strong base of adult learning science from which they can make informed decisions about how to enhance their own teaching methods.
Join presenter Mackenzie Johnson, M.S., CFLE, to understand the foundational concepts of adult learning, common characteristics and motivations of adult learners, key terminology of andragogy, and the differences (and similarities) between adult and youth learners. Participants will be prompted to consider their affinity for five different teaching perspectives and reflect on how this shapes instructional choices. Most importantly, the presenter will provide practical strategies for how to engage with adult learners appropriately and effectively across nearly any delivery format or educational setting. Participants will leave equipped with a summary handout of key points, resources for further learning, and a plan to start applying adult learning principles the very next day!
Attendees will leave this webinar with the ability to:
- Create educational content based on adult learners’ motivations.
- Develop teaching environments that incorporate best practices for adult learning.
- Implement research-based teaching strategies that use adult learning in the design and implementation of Family Life Education environments.
Approved for 1 hour of CFLE continuing education.
Intended audience: professors/instructors in higher education; Family Life Educators in academia and in the community
