Public policy impacts our daily lives, but it can be difficult for individuals to feel confident about discussing their research and suggesting policy implications and recommendations. This webinar will provide tools to connect research to policy and how to promote a family impact and racial equity lens in the policymaking process. As an example, the presenters will discuss Family Impact Seminars and how the seminars can be used to increase understanding, research, and advocacy for family policies. Specific strategies and tools will also be shared on how to teach family policy and connect research to family policy.

The Family Impact Seminars are a series of seminars, discussion sessions, and briefing reports that provide state policymakers with nonpartisan, solution-oriented research on family issues such as after-school programs, children’s health insurance, early childhood care and education, juvenile crime, and welfare reform.

By the end of this webinar, attendees will:

  1. Describe family policy and family policy processes;
  2. Compare different strategies for connecting research to policy;
  3. Provide strategies on how to share non-biased research with policymakers; and
  4. Understand methods for teaching family policy.

Approved for 1 hour of CFLE continuing education credit.

About the Presenters

Robert J. Duncan, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies and the Department of Public Health at Purdue. He is a core member of the Advanced Methodologies cross-college initiative at Purdue and a Family Policy Scholar with the Center for Families. Dr. Duncan’s research is focused on understanding the connections between children’s early environments and their development of school readiness skills. He is particularly interested in the role that education interventions and policies can play in fostering successful development to reduce academic, health, and economic inequalities. His quantitative interests are primarily in longitudinal and multilevel modeling, structural equation modeling, and causal inference.

Nayantara Nair, M.A., is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Purdue. Her research focuses on understanding resilience processes in adolescents and families from marginalized populations. Specifically, Ms. Nair is interested in examining protective factors that can buffer youth from maladaptive outcomes and identifying pathways through which youth and family well-being can be fostered in the context of adversity. She served as the 2019-2020 Levien Family Policy Intern at the Center for Families at Purdue.

Shelley MacDermid-Wadsworth, Ph.D., CFLE, is the director of the Center for Families, which houses the Family Impact Institute, and the Military Family Research Institute. She is an NCFR fellow, and a recipient of the Morrill Award, Purdue’s highest faculty honor for outstanding career achievements that have had an impact on society and serves on the NCFR Board. Her research focuses the relationships between work conditions and family life. Specifically, Dr. MacDermid-Wadsworth studies differences between small and large workplaces, how adults grow and develop as a result of their work experiences, and how different kinds of organizational policies make it easier or more difficult for workers to be successful at work and at home.
