Strategies for Acknowledging and Navigating Race in Transracial Adoptive Families
Presenter: Katie M. Hrapczynski, Ph.D., LCMFT
Transracial, adoptive families challenge the normative expectation that members of a family are all biologically connected and of the same race, ethnicity, and nation of origin. Given most transracial adoptive families involve White adoptive parents raising Children of Color, concerns regarding the parents’ capacity to meet the unique needs of their child exist. Research on how transracial adoptive family processes and environmental factors can facilitate and/or hinder adoptee well-being will be shared during this webinar. Attendees will also learn techniques that can be used to acknowledge and navigate race within transracial adoptive families.
