Managing sudden and/or unexpected stress can be challenging for families. Family professionals are uniquely positioned to help families in these situations but may not have deep or extensive knowledge on the topic.

This webinar will provide clarity on how a Family Life Educator—compared to a therapist or other helping professional—can be particulary beneficial in supporting families during crises. Webinar participants will be guided  on how to make decisions regarding their role as educators and will explore specific techniques for use in educational environments that discuss family stress. Attendees will have the opportunity to not only learn more about their role as Family Life Educators when assisting families working through stressful times, but will also learn about, demonstrate, and implement educational tools and actions.

By attending this webinar, students and family professionals at various experience levels will be able to reflect on their role and their readiness to respond to family stress situations. The skills taught will encourage attendees to prepare themselves and build partnerships that will allow them to react quickly and effectively to reduce negative family outcomes and facilitate family resilience in the face of unexpected demands.

Overall, attendees will leave this webinar with the ability to:

  1. Define different types of family stress;
  2. Assess their ability to work with families during stressful times;
  3. Describe educational activities related to family stress that are appropriate for Family Life Education environments;
  4. Explore plans for facilitating and/or creating safe spaces for children and families facing stress; and
  5. Practice educational actions that can help families prepare for or respond to situations likely to result in stress.

About the Presenter

Judith A. Myers-Walls, Ph.D., CFLE, has a doctorate in child development from Purdue University. She went on to be a faculty member at Purdue in human development and family studies for 31 years, working with Cooperative Extension and teaching in and outside the classroom. Her teaching interests and writing and research pursuits include Family Life Education and educational program delivery strategies, cultural contexts of families and parents, talking to children about difficult topics, online education for at-risk families—especially related to divorce/separation or abuse/neglect, and peace education for families.

In the academic department at Purdue, her responsibilities were to teach courses on children and parenting, advise students, and conduct research. Her extension appointment was to translate research findings in the area of human development for use by the general public.  More specifically, she trained other professionals (especially county extension staff) involved in programming for children, parents, and families; wrote pamphlets; delivered workshops; worked with mass media; developed curricula; reviewed materials; and supported Family Life Education in other ways.

Dr. Myers-Walls is an NCFR Fellow and the former editor of NCFR's Family Focus, a quarterly translational Family Science publication.
