Understanding and Applying the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model
In Family Science research, it’s incredibly valuable to be able to analyze dyadic data (data from a two-person interdependent relationship). However, family scholars typically receive little training in their graduate statistical courses on dyadic data analysis principles and techniques.
In this webinar, presenter Nathan Hardy, Ph.D., will provide a gentle introduction to the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM), a method for analyzing dyadic data.
You’ll learn a six-step process for executing the APIM with your dyadic data, as well as how to interpret findings as a consumer of dyadic research. Dr. Hardy will demonstrate the use of the APIM with structural equation modeling (SEM), and discuss its use in both SEM and multilevel modeling (MLM). He will demonstrate the restructuring of data in SPSS software and the running of the model in Mplus software.
During the webinar, you’ll also hear about why the APIM matters within the larger context of dyadic data analysis; learn concepts that are important when using the APIM (e.g., nonindependence, distinguishability); see examples of how the APIM is used in social science and Family Science research; and be introduced to more advanced uses of the APIM.
By attending this webinar, participants will be able to:
- restructure dyadic data in preparation for actor-partner interdependence modeling;
- understand the importance of determining and testing nonindependence and distinguishability when using dyadic data;
- follow a step-by-step process for analyzing and interpreting the APIM; and
- appreciate advanced uses of the APIM in mediation and moderation analyses, longitudinal designs, and treatment designs.

About the Presenter
Nathan R. Hardy, Ph.D., LMFT, is an assistant professor of human development and Family Science in the Marriage and Family Therapy program at Oklahoma State University. His primary research interests are healthy marriage, relationship education, and couple therapy. He currently serves as secretary for the Couples and Intimate Relationships Topical Interest Network at the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.
Dr. Hardy has published studies primarily using dyadic data analysis techniques with couples. In 2017, he attended the five-day dyadic data analysis workshop at Michigan State University with Deborah Kashy and Robert Ackerman. Dr. Hardy has primarily published studies about couple relationships using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model.
