Black youth within the United States continue to experience elevated risk for adverse health behaviors and outcomes. Black youths’ ability to form a strong ethnic-racial identity helps to reduce these risks. One contributing factor to a strong ethnic-racial identity are healthy verbal and nonverbal messages about the meaning of race and ethnicity, or ethnic-racial socialization. Among ethnic-racial minorities, positive ethnic-racial socialization messages can improve psychosocial outcomes, andamong Black youth specificallycompensate and protect against the effects of Black racial discrimination experiences. Specifically, positive ethnic-racial socialization messages are related to fewer negative health outcomes, healthy psychological and emotional functioning, higher self-esteem, and enhanced connection to cultural values.

This webinar will focus on understanding the development of Black ethnic-racial identity through ethnic-racial socialization messages and the influence of diverse and systemic social processes on the views of oneself and others. Participants will be given strategies to enhance areas of Black youth and emerging adults’ socialization experiences while also viewing these experiences systemically, further understanding perspectives on race and equity in community, educational, and therapeutic settings.

By the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to

  • Understand the relationship between diverse social messaging processes and Black youth identity formation,

  • Foster positive Black youth ethnic-racial socialization messages, and

  • Bring awareness to disparaging social messaging, promote healthy social messaging, and foster constructive Black identity development and formation
