The Lamar University Bachelor of Science Degree in Family and Consumer Sciences will prepare you for teaching FCS in Texas, complete with teacher certification through the Department of Teacher Education. If you choose a career outside of teaching, this degree will also set you up for positions that require a broad range of education and experience. By virtue of your substantial exposure to each of the major areas of study within the discipline, (i.e., nutrition, fashion retailing and merchandising, interior design, hospitality administration and family studies), as an FCS graduate, you will bring to your job a broad scope of knowledge regarding service and how to elevate individuals' and families' quality of life.

Our teacher certification program for the Bachelor of Science Degree in Family and Consumer Sciences at Lamar University provides professional training for careers requiring knowledge of family and consumer sciences and expertise in instructional methods. Upon graduating from this program, you will meet Texas requirements for teaching family & consumer science courses at the secondary level. You will also need to meet the certification requirements of the Lamar University Teacher Education Program as outlined in the Teacher Education section of the Lamar website. Before you can be certified, you must successfully complete the Family & Consumer Science content examination and the TExES examination covering Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities.
