Translating Terms to Action: Applying Cultural Competence in Your Work
Social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion are terms which many people can readily define but may not be able to practically apply to their work. So while many organizations today are requiring their employees to be more culturally informed, the ability to demonstrate—not just iterate—cultural competence can be difficult. To be successful in working with individuals from different cultures, one must be able to form an atmosphere of trust, cooperation, and mutual respect. This includes practicing complex skills such as fully understanding one’s own values and culture, being receptive to divergent viewpoints, and being respectful and willing to consider these differences. Thus, to truly be culturally competent, one must be aware of differences and similarities without judgement while also having the skill to communicate this in their professional setting.
This webinar will focus on articulating and demonstrating how to practice using a culturally-informed lens that can be used in teaching, research, or clinical settings. Particular attention will be focused on translating abstract concepts (e.g., inclusion, diversity) to actual systemic change in current or future professional work.
By the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:
- Identify and articulate their culturally-informed lens;
- Use a cultural lens to evaluate and assess current clinical work, teaching, and research; and
- Establish new culturally-informed practices.

About the Presenters
DeAnna Harris-McKoy, Ph.D., LMFT, is a licensed marriage and family therapist, AAMFT-approved supervisor, professor, researcher, and social justice advocate. She has over 10 years of clinical experience with diverse populations and disorders in a variety of clinical settings. She is currently an associate professor and marriage and family therapy program director at Northern Illinois University. She received two Bachelor of Science degrees from University of Maryland College Park in family studies and psychology, a master’s degree in family therapy from Drexel University, and a doctorate in marriage and family therapy from Florida State University. She has presented research at various local, national, and international conferences concerning Black mental health, adolescents, and social justice within the field of marriage and family therapy. She is a former AAMFT Minority Fellow and has received multiple awards for her community service, social justice work, and leadership.
Taimyr Strachan-Loudior, Ph.D., LMFT, is a licensed marriage and family therapist, and currently serves as a staff clinician at the University of West Georgia. She received a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from Valdosta State University, and a doctorate in couple and family therapy from the University of Iowa. Her research agenda includes increasing the representation and engagementof minorities utilizing mental health services, increasing the representation of minorities as mental health service providers, and increasing cultural competence in training and clinicalsettings. Her clinical experiences with racial/ethnic minorities and sexual minorities has influenced her interest in identifying pathways that can lead to an increase of retention rates in mental health treatment programs in an effort to decrease the health disparities occurring within these populations.
