Abstract(s)
Experts in the field of Families and Health will present on individual, family, and neighborhood risk factors influencing body mass index (BMI) across the lifespan including, childhood, adolescents, middle adulthood (mid 30s), and end of life. Data from low income, minority, and rural farm families will be utilized. In addition, mixed methods such as using Geographic Information System (GIS), direct observational methods, qualitative interviews, and survey data collection will be presented.
Objectives
(1) Participants will learn about the importance of using a family systems and socio-ecological framework to understand childhood obesity. (2) Participants will learn about the connection between multiple levels of influence (i.e., individual, family, neighborhood) on childhood obesity. (3) Participants will learn about results from four different studies examining the association between family and neighborhood influences on childhood obesity in children from racially/ethnically and socioeconomically diverse households.
