Abstract(s)

This symposium draws on research conducted, using a range of methods, from local community-based programs that serve fathers of color in four communities across the country. Despite abundant stereotypes, research on fathering among men of color is limited. Men’s involvement in complex kin networks and dynamic partnering relationships is often reduced to measures of relationship status, with little understanding of cultural context.  In particular, we have limited insight into how programs might capitalize on the strengths of African American and Latino fathers and families to enhance child and family well-being. These papers are intended to move the discussion of fathering beyond the stereotypes, and to explore different aspects of parenting behavior among fathers of color across a variety of programmatic contexts.

Objectives

To describe fathering behaviors across four different samples of fathers of colorTo explore how findings regarding fathering behavior can inform future intervention developmentTo examine factors that promote men’s positive engagement with various family members, including coparenting, partnering, and father/adolescent relationships
