About the Session
Obtaining and Maintaining a Working Status in the U.S.
In 2017, U.S. colleges and universities attracted 1.08 million international students (Institute of International Education, 2017). International students enrich the academic culture and contribute to the success of higher education in the U.S. and across the world. The success of international students living and working in the U.S. depends on a host of factors, such as advising and mentorship, meaningful peer relationships, opportunities to succeed in the classroom (as students and teachers), and research and outreach activities. Navigating immigration policies and procedures of the U.S. government – including systems of higher education that are often times different than their home country – add to the challenges encountered by international students and new professionals. This invited workshop will highlight topics of interest unique to the international SNP experience through eight roundtables led by students, scholars, and practitioners from a variety of cultural backgrounds and countries of origin.
Objectives
Attendees will gain knowledge in: (1) 1. Navigating socio-cultural challenges in a variety of personal and professional contexts; (2) Connecting with advisors, mentors, and peers and extending social networks; (3) Locating resources to better understand and navigate relevant government and academic policies and procedures (immigration paperwork, assistantships, scholarships, and grants)
Navigating Graduate Assistantships, Scholarships, and GrantS
