    Abstract(s)

This workshop aims to promote awareness of and expertise in the IPUMS data archive. IPUMS consists of integrated census and survey data from the United States and around the world. IPUMS facilitates user access to data and documentation and simplifies the production of a data file suitable for analysis. Free, downloadable datasets come with SAS, SPSS, Stata, and R command files, which include variable and value labels for ease of use. IPUMS also provides researchers with accessible and comprehensive online documentation. The workshop will provide an overview of the web-based data access and documentation system, a brief overview of how previous research has used IPUMS to study families, and a hands-on demonstration of the IPUMS data extraction system (for example, see usa.ipums.org). Workshop participants will have access to several hands-on exercises and will be provided information about online resources. The audience for the workshop includes graduate students, early career faculty, public policy / applied researchers, and anyone else interested in learning more about IPUMS.
