New Study Offers Quantitative Ranking of HDFS Departments

50 Programs in North America are Compared

The latest volume of Family Science Review (Vol. 23, 3) features a new article that ranks 50 Ph.D.-granting college departments in North America within the field of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS). This study uses a ranking system based on h-index scores (publication and citation rates), federal grant receipt, and outplacement of doctorate students.

These measures correlated well with one another and with previous peer-expert ratings of HDFS departments. Some departments fared better under quantitative productivity measures than they did under peer ratings, and vice-versa. The study examines pros and cons of various ranking approaches; discusses possible implications for departments and faculty members; and suggests areas for further research.
