New early-view articles published by NCFR's scholarly journals explore aspects of family social support, especially relevant during a time when many families are isolated from traditional support systems due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ning Hsieh and Hui Liu have authored the first national study to examine disparities in loneliness and social relationships by sexual orientation in late adulthood in the United States. They found that older lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults were significantly lonelier than their heterosexual counterparts, primarily due to a lower likelihood of having a partner and, to a lesser extent, lower levels of family support and greater friend strain. Joan Maya Mazelis and Laryssa Mykyta explore how low‐income parents of newborns tend to avoid seeking financial and other social support from family members, despite having a strong need for it.
