We are excited to announce the launch of a newly funded Robert Wood Johnson Foundation project: Examining Associations Between Poor Marital Functioning and Stress Eating Behaviors that Exacerbate Weight Gain, led by Dr. Chalandra Bryant. We plan to examine these associations by administering two interventions to explore factors that may mitigate distress and stress eating.
We are seeking a senior data analyst to join our diverse team of research and information technology professionals. We are looking for a smart, technically minded person who enjoys working with data, virtual reality equipment, and people. For this position, we seek someone with a strong data-driven social science or public health background who enjoys launching research projects, quantitative analysis, and organizing complex schedules.
In this position you will develop recruitment materials; train couples to use stress reducing technology; ship materials and equipment to couples; monitor data collection to identify couples experiencing high levels of stress; contact couples who miss scheduled data collection periods; track couples over time (e.g., use of anniversary cards, birthday cards); coordinate and schedule groups of couples for workshops; clean data; code; create codebooks; quantitatively analyze data; provide overall project management; identify/summarize articles for literature reviews; develop progress reports; assist with IRB tasks; and assist with participant recruitment efforts. Workshops and training for couples will be conducted remotely via Zoom by a clinician at the University of Georgia.
Your primary focus for the first year in this role will be identifying and installing scenes on Virtual Reality googles; shipping materials to study participants; recruiting participants; creating questionnaires on Qualtrics; employing a randomization procedure for intervention assignment; and creating codebooks. During the second year and third year, you will write technical reports and summaries of preliminary findings for conference submissions/presentations. Over the course of the three years of the project, you will be responsible for scheduling on-going workshops; tracking and managing the progress of a sample of minority couples living in Georgia; remotely assisting couples with the use of the technology needed for the project; downloading data onto SPSS as it arrives; cleaning data as it arrives; analyzing data; and identifying couples experiencing high levels of stress. Each year you will write reports for the funding agency.
• A master’s degree in applied data science/analysis or quantitative social science such as psychology, sociology, family science or other related discipline.
• One year of relevant experience.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with audiences from various disciplines, communities, and cultures.
• Experience using data management/sharing tools to facilitate teamwork (i.e., Google Drive, Dropbox).
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a diverse team.
• Higher level data manipulation skills (including documenting and organizing data and coding) and experience analyzing and visualizing complex data using SPSS, MPlus, or other statistical software.
Additional selection criteria include:
• Familiarity with and interest in social science.
• Familiarity with and interest in virtual reality.
• Experience maintaining and updating schedules and calendars.
• Strong attention to detail.
This position is housed in the Institute for Social Research and Data Innovation (ISRDI), a University-wide research institute that provides a vibrant and highly collaborative interdisciplinary research environment for four interrelated research centers (IPUMS, the Minnesota Population Center, the Life Course Center, and the Minnesota Research Data Center). As a colleague in this collaborative environment, you will work closely with the principal investigators, outreach coordinator, grants manager, and study participants. You will report directly to principal investigator Dr. Chalandra Bryant, University of Minnesota Professor of Family Social Science.
