Assistant/Associate/Full Extension Professor — 4-H Volunteer Development Specialist

In coordination with the University of Missouri Office of Extension and Engagement, and HDFS at the University of Missouri seeks a full-time Assistant/Associate/Extension Professor in the 4-H Volunteer Development. This is a joint 12-month, non-tenure track position between HDFS and MU Extension with the primary appointment being in HDFS. Rank will be assigned depending on qualifications and experience demonstrated through a curricula vita and by the college’s promotion policy.

This position provides statewide leadership and strategic planning for the Missouri 4-H Volunteer Development Program and will (1) Ensure that volunteer recruitment, screening, retention, orientation, training, and recognition systems are in place at local and state levels; (2) Lead strategic planning to grow, diversify and improve local, regional, and state volunteer systems; (3) Build partnerships with businesses, academic institutions, MU departments, community organizations and agencies, professional associations, retirement organizations, and alumni groups to strengthen and expand the volunteer base; (4) Lead the development of volunteer roles that balance program needs with modern lifestyles (e.g., short-term volunteers, episodic volunteers, corporate volunteers through partnerships, mentoring).

The faculty will also be responsible for building new, as well as upon existing, collaborations between 4-H, EXT, and HDFS, as well as with colleagues in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD). The faculty will build multidisciplinary collaborations with campus faculty to develop programs, events, and to seek external funding, thus contributing to both the research and the engagement mission of the university. This faculty will also contribute to recruitment of undergraduate MU majors as well as graduate programs and provide opportunities for hands-on learning, high-impact experiences (such as internships) for HDFS majors. The faculty may also teach one to two courses per year in HDFS in a related area such as youth development, volunteer development, youth-adult partnerships, or program evaluation. These may be associated with our HDFS Undergraduate majors or with the GP-IDEA MA programs in Youth Development and Family and Community Services. The faculty will also complete service for EXT and HDFS.

The start date is negotiable with preference for start date of March 1, 2023. Salary is commensurate with experience, and the position includes ongoing supplemental monetary support for scholarly activities. The appointment is an annually renewable contract with MU HDFS and the Missouri 4-H Center for Youth Development. The faculty reports to the Department Chair with secondary supervision from the Director of the 4-H Center for Youth Development.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Utilize principles of volunteer development, positive youth development and education to build a research base program with colleagues, teaching and research faculty, Extension faculty and staff, youth, volunteers, community partners and other stakeholders
• Build partnerships with businesses, academic institutions, MU departments, community organizations and agencies, professional associations, retirement organizations, and alumni groups to strengthen and expand the volunteer base.
• Lead statewide strategic planning to grow, diversify and improve local, regional and state volunteer systems and ensure that effective volunteer recruitment, screening, retention, orientation, training, and recognition systems are in place at local and state levels.
• Lead the development of volunteer roles that balance program needs with modern lifestyles (e.g., short-term volunteers, episodic volunteers, corporate volunteers through partnerships, mentoring) and oversee the Volunteer Advisory Council (VAC)
• Consider the expertise of volunteers and partners in educational design teams to ensure educational materials represent rigorous and cutting-edge research, diverse viewpoints, and culturally responsive and respectful approaches.
• Develop, regulate, and improve policies and procedures that affect volunteerism in ways that assure efficiencies while preserving the integrity of the program. Collaborate on evaluation of program development and evaluation processes to ensure and assess the efficacy of volunteer systems.
● Assess staff development needs relating to volunteer leadership and systems management. Design, develop, and coordinate the delivery of online training, cohort learning experiences, and face-to-face workshops for local Extension educators who have significant work responsibility for volunteer leadership and systems management.
● Oversee the volunteer screening process and lead a team of regional support staff who manage the process. Serve as a point of contact with the background check vendor and Office of Human Resources.
● Establish strong working relationships and provide guidance to 4-H youth development staff and academics on issues related to risk management, youth protection, and volunteer conflict management.
● Ensure volunteer compliance with the University of Missouri Extension and 4-H Center for Youth Development safety of minors and risk management policies and Code of Conduct. Facilitate problem-solving processes for responding and bringing resolution to complex volunteer performance issues.
● Communicate the value of volunteer systems to stakeholders as well as lead and manage statewide volunteer recognition opportunities. Initiate a communications plan in collaboration with the communications director to inform, teach and support volunteers in their roles.
● Serve on state, multi-task and national Extension work groups to advance volunteer systems and the field.
● Teach one to two courses in MU College of Education and Human Development, Department of Human Development and Family Science per year.
● Other duties as assigned.

Demonstrate mastery of core competencies, including subject matter expertise, effective and innovate teaching strategies, program development processes, and integration of new and emerging technology.
• Provide statewide leadership for Missouri 4-H in the areas of volunteer development.

The faculty reports to the Department Chair in the Department of Human Development and Family Science with secondary supervision from the Director of the 4-H Center for Youth Development.
 

Qualifications

• An earned doctorate in Human Development and Family Science or a related field with course work in a discipline or program related to volunteer development at time of appointment. Relevant coursework in one or more of the following areas: education; organizational systems and human resource management; community development/ partnerships; child, adolescent, and human development; and volunteerism. Equivalent experience will be considered.

Candidates will be evaluated on:
• Record of scholarly productivity and evidence of maintaining such public scholarship.
• Professional experience in designing, conducting, and evaluating education opportunities for youth and volunteers.
• Ability to teach and mentor students within a youth/ lifespan development and family science framework.
• Ability to apply knowledge of: volunteerism and youth-adult relationships, human growth and development, experiential education, community collaborations and state and national issues relative to youth.
• Ability to work and engage with department, university, and community members.

Missouri 4-H Center for Youth Development. The 4-H Center is located on University of Missouri campus in Columbia. Missouri 4-H serves more than 70,000 youth around the state using different delivery modes, from Community Clubs to Afterschool and In School programs.

The Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) Department. HDFS joined the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) on July 1, 2021, as the sixth and newest department. Faculty in the department conduct research about child, adolescent, and adult development, diversity and multiculturalism, family and relationship science, health, and family functioning. HDFS offers both undergraduate degrees (BA and BS) and graduate degrees (MA, MS, and PHD) programs, and has a significant presence on campus and within the state through its Extension outreach and services. HDFS is home to two large centers: Center for Family Policy and Research (CFPR) and Child Development Laboratory (CDL). The CFPR offers faculty and students opportunities to work on grant-funded research and intervention projects that directly serve children, families, and communities. The CDL provides childcare for children under six years and serves as a teaching and research laboratory for faculty and students. The Department currently has over 4-million in externally funded grants and contracts.
