Expanding Tools for Wellness through Mobile Health (mHealth)

Mobile health (mHealth) technologies provide avenues to gather information and deliver interventions in real-time across multiple domains of health behavior. In this discussion, we intend to explore ways in which mHealth can be used to enhance research, education, and clinical work. We will present a focus group study we conducted to explore the development of a relationshiop education application (app) to provide an example of factors to consider when using an mHealth framework. We will then examine pros and cons of using the mHealth framework in various contexts, formats to most effectively disseminate information, and ethical considerations involved with mHealth.

Research Outcomes on the Biblical Directive to Not Exasperate Children

The Young Parenting Inventory (YPI), hypothesized to measure early childhood experiences of exasperation by parents, has only been examined with a Western (UK) student sample. Using a 625 non-student, non-clinical, Chinese majority Christian sample in Singapore, analysis of the YPI yielded through exploratory factor analysis yielded nine unhealthy parenting styles. Acceptable reliability and convergent validity were also obtained, using an established instrument known as the s-EMBU (Swedish acronym for "My memories of upbringing"). These nine parenting scales, more nuanced than the scales of more established instruments, will help identify specific parenting styles that may cause conflicts with children.

Bereavement and Mourning in Kenya: Beyond Community-Based Rituals

Using the case study method, three adults in Kenya were interviewed about their experiences following the death of a close family member. Traditional practices in Kenya following a death reflect collectivist assumptions. Our respondents framed their experiences primarily from this point of view but also expressed that their individual needs were not recognized. Three themes that emerged were: the importance of economic independence, resistance to wife inheritance, and loss of family ties to in-laws. We frame our findings in terms of individualism and collectivism theory. Further research is needed that asks bereaved individuals about the subjective meaning of their loss

Reaching Across Generations: Using a Popular Press Book to Engage Young Women in Feminist Research

Within the current backdrop of neoliberalism and post-feminism, definitions of feminism remain contested (Ringrose et al, 2013). Due to this concern, the authors sought to encourage enlightening discussions among a group of undergraduate and graduate research assistants regarding feminism.Following the second author's transformation from FFF, the second author provided Jessica Valenti's Full Frontal Feminism to all of her research assistants.The authors will discuss how the book facilitated feminist understandings, discussions, and set the tone for the research team.We also share some of the third author's misgivings and the students' cautions about the book, as well as other ideas and resources.

An Exploration of the Implementation of Title IX in Regard to Sexual Violence on College Campuses

The purpose of the proposed workshop/roundtable discussion is to increase participant knowledge and promote an exploration of the implications of Title IX as it relates to sexual violence on college campuses. Included will be an overview of Title IX and a review of current practices at a selection of universities. Topics for discussion will include preventing revictimization of sexual violence survivors in the reporting/adjudication process, due process for respondents, reporting requirements for faculty/issues of academic privacy, training of Title IX investigators and disciplinary board members, and best practices in Title IX implementation.
