Roles at an NCFR Conference Session

Each NCFR conference session has a presenter(s), but there might be a few other people around helping make sure the session goes as planned. Keep these roles in mind for your potential involvement in future conferences, too!

Presider

  • Serves as a time-keeper and keeps the session moving in a timely manner
  • Gives a welcome to the session; introduces speakers
  • Helps with Q&A / audience discussion if no facilitator is present

Discussant

  • Gives five minutes-worth of "take-home" remarks about the presentation material, after the presentations have been given — how the papers are connected, issues for elaboration and discussion, etc.
  • Provides implications of the research presented
  • If no presider is present, the discussant also introduces the presenters

Facilitator

  • Facilitates the post-presentation discussion / questions between the presenters and the audience
  • Prepares questions about each paper in advance to aid discussion; limits discussion time
