NCFR’s Future of Family Science Taskforce was assembled in order to develop goals and strategies crucial to the further advancement of Family Science. One goal identified by the taskforce was the initiation of professional and leadership development opportunities within NCFR, giving rise to the Academic Administration and Leadership (AAL) Focus Group. AAL members determined that a preconference workshop on leadership development should be piloted as part of the 2017 NCFR Annual Conference, and a planning group within AAL selected a strength-based framework in support of this effort.
Open to all current Family Science leaders, this preconference workshop is designed to create opportunities for participants to learn about their personal leadership strengths, as well as how those abilities interact with the strengths of fellow faculty and staff members. We also will discuss how those strengths can be used to tackle problems faced by academic administrators such as managing difficult conversations and working effectively with deans and other upper level administrators.

The most effective leaders lead with their strengths. We will take a deep dive into our unique combination of Top Five Talents and how these give clues to our Leadership Styles. After fifty years of research focus on successful leaders, the Gallup Organization developed StrengthsFinder 2.0, a tool that identifies the presence of talents in 34 general areas referred to as “themes.” Talents are ways in which we naturally think, feel, and behave as individuals and have great impact our work, recreation, and life. Participants will further examine how to build upon their greatest talents, discover how their unique combination of their Top Five reveal Leadership Styles, and how to build powerful teams and strong partnerships.
