Abstract(s)

This symposium showcases an innovative teaching approach to bring family experiences to life in the classroom via animated vignettes. Based on case studies from the Rural Families Speak about Health (RFSH) Study, the authors developed three earning modules to facilitate undergraduate learning about rural, low-income families: (a) nutrition and health promotion, (b) family relationships, and (c) work and family. Each team transformed transcript into brief animated movies using GoAnimate, a user-friendly, web-based software program. Each team will delineate their student learning objectives, show their brief animated movie, share activities to maximize student engagement with the material, and present evaluation data. These modules will fill a critical gap in knowledge for students who plan to go into outreach professions, including cooperative extension, in rural areas.

Objectives

To increase awareness of the unique experiences of rural families in three areas: nutrition and health, family relationships, and work and family. To evaluate the effectiveness of animating case studies to facilitate undergraduate teaching and learning about the challenges and strengths of rural, low-income familiesTo evaluate the effectiveness of instructor and student materials accompanying each learning module
