Poster Session 3: Hispanic/Latina/o/x Families

Presenters: Fiorella Carlos Chavez, Matthew Ogan, Sahitya Maiya, J. Monk

Summary
Relational uncertainty (RU) is present in relationships at all stages (Knobloch & Knobloch-Fedders, 2010) and it is likely that Latinos/as will experience romantic RU at some point of their adult life. Given that RU is associated with depressive symptoms (DS) among romantic partners (Knobloch & Knobloch-Fedders, 2010), this study examined the associations between RU with DS, life satisfaction (LS), and the mediating role of perceived stress (PS) in these associations. We also examined the moderating role of familism support (FS) in the association between RU and PS. Results showed that young adults experiencing RU toward partner displayed greater DS and lower LS. Further, PS only mediated the associations between RU toward partner, DS and LS. FS moderated the association between RU toward partner and PS.

Objectives
-- To examine the associations between relationship uncertainty (i.e., toward self, partner), perceived stress, and well-being outcomes (i.e., depressive symptoms, life satisfaction) among Latina/o young adults.
-- To explore whether perceived stress would mediate the relation between relationship uncertainty (i.e., self, partner) with depressive symptoms and life satisfaction.
-- To examine the moderating role of familism support on the link between relational uncertainty toward partner with perceived stress.
