Summary
Although parents are significant figures that influence adolescents' development, few studies have examined adolescents' grit within the family. According to the intergenerational transmission of self-regulation, parental grit may be closely related to that of their children. The present study investigated a total of 2,579 dyads of Korean adolescents and their parents. The relationship between their grit levels and autonomy parenting were studied by Baron and Kenny(1986)'s three-step regression analysis and bootstrapping. The results demonstrated that autonomy supportive parenting mediates the relationship between parental and adolescent grit. In conclusion, we discuss the implications of the results for further research and practice.
Objectives
-- To evaluate the intergenerational transmission of grit in the family context
-- To demonstrate the mediating effects of parental autonomy support on the relationship of parental and adolescent grit
-- To demonstrate the effectiveness of parental autonomy support to improve adolescents' grit
